The release of the free distribution OpenIndiana 2025.10 has been announced, succeeding the distribution OpenSolaris, the development of which was discontinued by Oracle. OpenIndiana provides users with a working environment based on a fresh slice of the Illumos project codebase. The development of OpenSolaris technologies continues in the Illumos project, which is advancing the kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, as well as the core set of user system utilities and libraries. Three types of ISO images have been created for download — a server edition with console applications (1 GB), a minimal build (498 MB), and a build with the MATE graphical environment (2.2 GB).
Key changes in OpenIndiana 2025.10:
- 1140 packages have been updated.
- Several utilities written in Rust have been added, including lsd, mergiraf, ripgrep, and fd. The Helix code editor, also written in Rust, has been included.
- Several implementations (Traella and Swi) of interpreters and of virtual machines for the Prolog language have been added.
- Improved support for SunRay thin clients.
- Branches for Python 3.14, 3.13, 3.12, and 3.9 are available. Hundreds of packages for Python and Perl have been updated.
- Packages for distributed storage solutions Seaweedfs, garage, and minio have been added.
- Support for systems with SPARC architecture has been implemented in Zabbix-server.
- Versions of Librewolf 144, Firefox 144, Thunderbird 144, LibreOffice 25.8.2, Librecad 2.2, SDL 3.2.22, Fish 4.0 (rewritten in Rust), Clang 20.1.8, Cmake 4.1.2, CUPS 2.4.14, Emacs 30.2, FFmpeg 7.1.2, GIMP 3.0.6, GNOME 44.4, Go 1.25, Netbeans 27, Node.js 24.10, NVIDIA 580.95.05, QEMU 10.1, Rust 1.89, Vim 9.1.1971, and VirtualBox 7.1.10 have been updated.
