The OpenMandriva project has published the release of OpenMandriva ROME 24.12, a version of the OpenMandriva distribution that utilizes a continuous delivery model for updates (rolling releases). This version allows access to new package versions developed for the OpenMandriva Lx 6 branch without waiting for a traditional distribution to be formed. ISO images sized 2.3-3.2 GB with desktop environments KDE5, KDE6 with Wayland, KDE6 with X11, GNOME, Cosmic, and LXQt, supporting boot in Live mode, are prepared for download.
Release Features:
- The formation of builds with the alpha version of the COSMIC desktop environment, written in Rust, has begun.
- Components of the KDE desktop environment have been updated to versions KDE Plasma 6.2.4, KDE Gears 24.08.3, KDE Frameworks 6.8.0, and Qt 6.8.0. By default, the graphics stack based on X11 continues to be used, but an ISO image with KDE Plasma 6 based on Wayland has also been prepared. Additionally, builds and packages with KDE Plasma 5.27 and Qt 5.15 are available.
- The OpenMandriva repository has added separate packages proton and proton-experimental, allowing games to run without being tied to the Steam package.
- The OM-Welcome first login application has been enhanced, with additional modules added to simplify the installation of the most popular programs.
- System components have been updated: Linux kernel 6.12.1 (an optional package with kernel 6.13-rc1 is available), LLVM/Clang 19.1.4, GCC 14.2.0, Glibc 2.40, Systemd 256.9, Mesa 24.3.0.
- User applications have been updated: LibreOffice 24.8.3 (with components for integration with Qt 6 and KDE Plasma 6), Chromium 131.0.6778.86 (with patches to disable calls to Google services and restoring JPEG-XL format support), Firefox 133.0 (with patches to disable calls to Mozilla servers), Falkon 24.08.3, GIMP 3.0 rc, VirtualBox 7.1.4.
