Oracle has released the Oracle Linux 8.4 distribution, built on the package base of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4. An unrestricted installation ISO image, sized at 8.6 GB, is available for download, prepared for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) architectures. Unlimited and free access to the yum repository with binary package updates for bug fixes (errata) and security issues is available for Oracle Linux. Separately supported Application Stream modules are also prepared for download.
In addition to the kernel package from RHEL (based on kernel 4.18), Oracle Linux offers its own Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 6, derived from Linux kernel 5.4 and optimized for working with Oracle's industrial software and hardware. The source code for the kernel, including individual patch breakdowns, is available in Oracle's public Git repository. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is installed by default, positioned as an alternative to the standard RHEL kernel package and provides several advanced features, such as DTrace integration and enhanced Btrfs support.
The new version features the release of the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel R6U2, while the functionality of Oracle Linux 8.4 and RHEL 8.4 is completely identical (the change list in Oracle Linux 8.4 mirrors the change list in RHEL 8.4).
