Oracle has released Oracle Linux 9.6, built on the package base of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.6 and fully binary-compatible with it. Unrestricted installation ISO images are available for download, sized at 13 GB and 1.3 GB, prepared for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) architectures. For Oracle Linux 9, there is unlimited and free access to the yum repository with binary updates for packages addressing bugs (errata) and security issues. Additionally, separate supported repositories with Application Stream and CodeReady Builder package sets have been prepared for download.
In addition to the kernel package from RHEL (based on kernel 5.14), Oracle Linux offers its own Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 8 (UEK 8), based on Linux kernel 6.12 and optimized for use with Oracle's enterprise software and hardware. The source code for the kernel, including patches, is available in Oracle's public Git repository. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is installed by default, positioned as an alternative to the standard RHEL kernel package, and provides a number of enhanced features such as DTrace integration and improved Btrfs support. Besides the additional kernel features, the releases of Oracle Linux 9.6 and RHEL 9.6 are completely identical (the change log can be viewed in the RHEL 9.6 announcement).
