The Parrot 5.1 distribution release is now available, based on the Debian 11 package base and including a selection of tools for system security assessment, forensic analysis, and reverse engineering. Several ISO images with the MATE environment are offered for everyday use, security testing, installation on Raspberry Pi 4 boards, and creating specialized installations, for example, for use in cloud environments.
The Parrot distribution is positioned as a portable laboratory for security experts and forensic analysts, focusing on tools for testing cloud systems and Internet of Things devices. It also includes cryptographic tools and programs for secure internet access, including TOR, I2P, anonsurf, gpg, tccf, zulucrypt, veracrypt, truecrypt, and luks.
In the new release:
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.18 (previously 5.16).
- Images for running in Docker containers have been redesigned. A new image registry, parrot.run, has been introduced, which can be used in addition to the default docker.io. All images are now provided in multiarch format and support amd64 and arm64 architectures.
- Packages and backports have been updated, with new versions of Go 1.19 and LibreOffice 7.4 provided.
- Changes have been made to the Firefox profile, aimed at enhancing privacy and security. Features related to sending telemetry to Mozilla have been disabled. The bookmarks collection has been redesigned. DuckDuckGo has been set as the default search engine.
- Many specialized utilities have been updated, including the reverse engineering tools rizin and rizin-cutter, as well as the metasploit and exploitdb packages.
- The AnonSurf 4.0 anonymity toolset has been updated, redirecting all traffic through Tor without separate proxy configuration.
- Support for Raspberry Pi boards has been improved, including the addition of Wi-Fi support for the Raspberry Pi 400 model.
