Proxmox, known for developing the Proxmox Virtual Environment distribution for deploying virtual server infrastructures, has released Proxmox Mail Gateway 6.4. Proxmox Mail Gateway is presented as a ready-made solution for quickly establishing a system to monitor email traffic and protect internal mail servers.
The installation ISO image is available for free download. Distribution-specific components are open under the AGPLv3 license. For updates, there is a paid Enterprise repository as well as two free repositories with different levels of update stabilization. The system components are based on the Debian 10.9 (Buster) package base and Linux kernel 5.4. It is possible to install Proxmox Mail Gateway components on an already running Debian 10. servers based on Debian 10.
Proxmox Mail Gateway operates as a proxy server acting as a gateway between the external network and the internal mail server based on MS Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Postfix. It provides the ability to manage all incoming and outgoing email traffic. All email logs are analyzed and can be accessed through a web interface. Both graphs for assessing overall dynamics and various reports and forms for information on specific emails and delivery status are provided. Cluster configurations are supported to ensure high availability (maintaining a synchronized backup server, with data synchronized via SSH tunnel) or load balancing.
A complete set of tools is provided to ensure protection, spam filtering, phishing, and virus prevention. ClamAV and Google Safe Browsing are used to block malicious attachments, and a comprehensive approach based on SpamAssassin is offered to combat spam, including support for sender verification, SPF, DNSBL, greylisting, Bayesian classification, and blocking based on spammer URI databases. For legitimate correspondence, a flexible filtering system is provided, allowing rules to be set for mail processing based on domain, recipient/sender, time of receipt, and content type.
Key innovations:
- A tool for creating for TLS certificates for domains using the Let’s Encrypt service and the ACME protocol, as well as for uploading certificates generated independently.
- The SpamAssassin spam filtering system has been updated to version 3.4.5, adding the capability to deliver verified rule updates.
- The interface for managing spam messages placed in quarantine has been improved. The administrator interface now includes the option to display all messages currently in quarantine.
- The interface for viewing logs has been enhanced to include information about outgoing connections established using TLS.
- Integration with the backup infrastructure based on Proxmox Backup Server has been improved, including the ability to receive email notifications about backups.
