After a year of development, the Redcore Linux 2101 distribution has been released, aiming to combine the features of Gentoo with usability for everyday users. The distribution offers a simple installer that allows for the quick deployment of a working system without the need to rebuild components from source code. Users have access to a repository with pre-compiled binary packages, supported by a continuous update cycle (rolling model). A proprietary package manager, sisyphus, is employed for package management. An ISO image featuring the KDE desktop is available for installation, sized at 3.6 GB (x86_64).
In the new version:
- Synchronization with the Gentoo testing tree as of May 31 has been completed.
- For installation, packages with Linux kernel versions 5.11.22, 5.10.40 LTS, and 5.4.122 LTS are available.
- Updated versions include glibc 2.32, gcc 10.2.0, binutils 2.35, llvm 12, mesa 21.1.1, libdrm 2.4.106, xorg-server 1.20.11, alsa 1.2.5, pulseaudio 13.0, gstreamer 1.16.3, KDE Plasma 5.21.5, and KDE apps 21.04.1.
- Browsers offered include firefox 89.0, chrome/chromium 91, opera 76, vivaldi 3.8, microsoft-edge 91, and falkon 3.1.0-r1.
- Support for self-contained packages in flatpak format has been added.
- The need to enter a password when booting in Live mode has been removed.
- Included are the open-vm-tools packages (for working with vmWare virtual machines) and spice-vdagent (agent supporting the SPICE remote access protocol for QEMU/KVM).
- The documentation in the sisyphus package manager has been updated. When switching between the master (stable) and next (testing) branches, user-defined USE flags, keywords, and masks are now remembered. The update logic has changed—sisyphus no longer attempts to upgrade the system to the 'testing' branch, but maintains packages in an up-to-date state based on the stable branch.
