A year after the last release, the Redcore Linux 2201 distribution has been published, which attempts to combine the capabilities of Gentoo with convenience for regular users. The distribution features a simple installer that allows for a quick setup of a working system without requiring the reassembly of components from source code. Users are provided with a repository of ready-made binary packages, accompanied by a continuous update cycle (rolling model). A custom package manager, Sisyphus, is used for package management. An installation ISO image with the KDE desktop is available, sized at 4.2 GB (x86_64).
In the new version:
- Synchronization with the Gentoo testing tree has been completed as of October 5.
- For installation, packages are available with Linux kernel version 5.15.71 (default) and 5.19.
- The user environment has been updated to KDE Plasma 5.25.5, KDE Gear 22.08.1, KDE Frameworks 5.98.0.
- Package versions have been updated, including glibc 2.35, gcc 12.2.0, binutils 2.39, llvm 14.0.6, mesa 12.2.0, Xorg 21.1.4, Xwayland 21.1.3, libdrm 2.4.113, alsa 1.2.7.2, pulseaudio 16.1, gstreamer 1.20.3, firefox 105.0.2, chromium 106.0.5249.91, opera 90.0.4480.84, vivaldi 5.4.2753.51, edge 106.0.1370.34.
- The mq-deadline I/O scheduler is used for SSDs with SATA and NVME interfaces, while the bfq scheduler is used for SATA disks.
- To enhance the performance of multi-threaded games, the 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) mechanism is available.
- The basic package includes the timeshift backup system, which uses rsync with hard link installation or Btrfs snapshots to provide functionality similar to System Restore in Windows and Time Machine in macOS.
