After three years since the last update, the Siduction 2021.1 release has been formed, developing a desktop-oriented Linux distribution built on the Debian Sid (unstable) package base. It is noted that the preparation of the new release began about a year ago, but in April 2020, key project developer Alf Gaida stopped communicating, and nothing has been heard from him since. Other developers could not clarify what happened, but the team managed to gather their strength and continue development with the remaining members.
Siduction is a fork of Aptosid, which separated in July 2011. A key difference from Aptosid is the use of a newer version of KDE as the user environment from the experimental Qt-KDE repository, as well as the creation of distribution builds based on fresh versions of Xfce, LXDE, GNOME, Cinnamon, MATE, and LXQt, along with a minimalist X.Org build based on the Fluxbox window manager and the ‘noX’ build offered without a graphical environment for users who wish to assemble their system themselves.
The new release upgrades the desktop environments to KDE Plasma 5.20.5 (with some components pulled from branch 5.21), LXQt 0.16.0, Cinnamon 4.8.6, Xfce 4.16, and LXDE 10. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.10.15, and the system manager Systemd to 247. The package base is synchronized with the Debian Unstable repository as of February 7. The installer based on the Calamares framework has been improved. In the Xorg and noX builds, the Wi-Fi daemon iwd is utilized for configuring wireless network connections.
