A release of the specialized distribution Tails 5.4 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been announced. It is based on the Debian package base and designed for anonymous internet access. Anonymous browsing in Tails is ensured by the Tor system. All connections, except traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by the packet filter by default. User data is stored in a persistent mode using encryption between sessions. An iso image has been prepared for download, capable of running in Live mode, with a size of 1 GB.
The new version includes changes to strengthen the protection of the Linux kernel: the randomization mode for the list of free memory pages has been enabled (page_alloc.shuffle=1); automatic loading of TTY Line Discipline has been disabled (dev.tty.ldisc_autoload=0); slub_debug=P and page_poison=1 settings have been disabled in favor of a more efficient memory cleaning mode init_on_free=1.
In the Unsafe Browser, used to access resources on the local network, the HTTPS-only mode has been disabled as the enforced redirect to HTTPS complicated connections to certain wireless networks that use HTTP to access captive portals. The versions of Tor Browser 11.5.2 (the release has not been officially announced yet), Tor 0.4.7.10, and Linux kernel 5.10.136 have been updated.
