The release of the Ubuntu 20.10 "Groovy Gorilla" distribution is now available, classified as an interim release, with updates provided for 9 months (support will be available until July 2021). Ready test images have been created for Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin (the edition for China).
Key Changes:
- Application versions have been updated. The desktop has been upgraded to GNOME 3.38, and the Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.8. Versions of GCC 10, LLVM 11, OpenJDK 11, Rust 1.41, Python 3.8.6, Ruby 2.7.0, Perl 5.30, Go 1.13, and PHP 7.4.9 have been updated. A new release of the LibreOffice 7.0 office suite has been proposed. System components have been updated, such as glibc 2.32, PulseAudio 13, BlueZ 5.55, NetworkManager 1.26.2, QEMU 5.0, and Libvirt 6.6.
- The default use of the nftables packet filter is now implemented.
- Official support for Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 has been provided, for which a separate build of Ubuntu Desktop has been prepared with specially optimized settings.
- The Ubiquity installer has added the ability to enable authentication in Active Directory.
- The popcon (popularity-contest) package has been removed from the main set, which was used to transmit anonymized telemetry about downloads, installations, updates, and removals of packages.
- Access to the utility /usr/bin/dmesg is restricted only to users belonging to the "adm" group. The reason mentioned is that the output of dmesg may contain information that could be used by attackers to facilitate the creation of exploits for privilege escalation.
- Changes in images for cloud systems: Builds with specialized kernels for cloud systems and KVM for speeding up the boot process will now load without initramfs by default (regular kernels still use initramfs). To accelerate the first boot, a pre-formed seed for snap is provided, eliminating the need for dynamic loading of required components.
- In Kubuntu The KDE Plasma 5.19 desktop, KDE Applications 20.08.1 suite, and Qt 5.14.2 library are proposed. Versions of Elisa 20.08.1, latte-dock 0.9.10, Krita 4.3.0, and Kdevelop 5.5.2 have been updated.
- In Ubuntu MATE As in the previous release, the MATE 1.24 desktop is included.
- In Lubuntu The LXQt 0.15.0 graphical environment is proposed.
- Ubuntu BudgieShuffler, the interface for quick navigation through open windows and grouping windows in a grid, has added a "sticky neighbors" feature and implemented tools for command line management. The menu now includes support for GNOME settings search and has removed many distracting icons. A Mojave theme has been added with macOS-style icons and interface elements. A new fullscreen applet for navigating installed applications has been introduced, which can be used as an alternative to the application menu. The Budgie desktop has been updated to a fresh code snapshot from Git.
- In Ubuntu Studio The transition to using KDE Plasma as the default desktop has been completed (previously Xfce was offered). It is noted that KDE Plasma features high-quality tools for graphic artists and photographers (Gwenview, Krita) and better support for Wacom tablets. The transition to the new Calamares installer has also been made. Ubuntu Studio Controls has restored support for Firewire (drivers based on ALSA and FFADO are available). A new sound session manager, forked from Non Session Manager, and the mcpdisp utility have been included. Versions of Ardour 6.2, Blender 2.83.5, KDEnlive 20.08.1, Krita 4.3.0, GIMP 2.10.18, Scribus 1.5.5, Darktable 3.2.1, Inkscape 1.0.1, Carla 2.2, Studio Controls 2.0.8, OBS Studio 25.0.8, MyPaint 2.0.0 have been updated. Rawtherapee has been removed from the base package in favor of Darktable. Jack Mixer has been reinstated in the core set.
- In Xubuntu The versions of components Parole Media Player 1.0.5, Thunar File Manager 1.8.15, Xfce Desktop 4.14.2, Xfce Panel 4.14.4, Xfce Terminal 0.8.9.2, Xfce Window Manager 4.14.5, etc., have been updated.
Changes in Ubuntu Server:
- Support for Active Directory has been improved in the adcli and realmd packages.
- The Samba 4.12 package has been built with the GnuTLS library, resulting in a significant increase in encryption performance for SMB3.
- The Dovecot IMAP server has been updated to release 2.3.11, with SSL/STARTTLS support for proxied doveadm connections and the ability to perform IMAP transactions in batch mode.
- The library liburing has been included, allowing the use of the asynchronous I/O interface io_uring, which outperforms libaio (for example, liburing is supported in samba-vfs-modules and qemu packages).
- A package with the metric collection system Telegraf has been added, which can be used alongside Grafana and Prometheus for building a monitoring infrastructure.
