Virtuozzo, a company that develops server software for virtualization based on open projects, has released the distribution of Virtuozzo Linux 8.4, built by recompiling the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 packages. The distribution is fully binary compatible and identical in functionality to RHEL 8.4, and can be used as a transparent replacement for solutions based on RHEL 8 and CentOS 8. ISO images are available for download, sized at 1.6 GB and 4.2 GB.
Virtuozzo Linux is positioned as a replacement for CentOS 8, ready for production deployments. Previously, the distribution served as the base operating system for the virtualization platform developed by Virtuozzo and various commercial products. Now, Virtuozzo Linux is provided without restrictions, is free, and is developed with community involvement. The support cycle aligns with the release cycle of updates for RHEL 8.
Changes in Virtuozzo Linux 8.4 fully correspond to the changes in RHEL 8.4, including support for operation over TCP in VPN IPsec based on Libreswan, stabilization of the declarative API nmstate for managing network settings, Ansible modules for automating role-based access management (RBAC) in IdM (Identity Management), AppStream modules with new branches of Python 3.9, SWIG 4.0, Subversion 1.14, Redis 6, PostgreSQL 13, MariaDB 10.5, GCC Toolset 10, LLVM Toolset 11.0.0, Rust Toolset 1.49.0, Go Toolset 1.15.7.
Alongside VzLinux as alternatives to classic CentOS 8, AlmaLinux (developed by CloudLinux in collaboration with the community), Rocky Linux (developed by the community under the leadership of the CentOS founder with support from a specially created company Ctrl IQ), and Oracle Linux are also positioned. Additionally, Red Hat has made it possible to use RHEL for free in organizations that develop open-source software and in individual developer environments with up to 16 virtual or physical systems.
