The release of the Parrot 6.0 distribution is now available, based on the Debian package base and including a suite of tools for system security testing, forensic analysis, and reverse engineering. Several ISO images with the MATE environment are offered for everyday use, security testing, installation on Raspberry Pi boards, and creating specialized installations, such as those for cloud environments.
The Parrot distribution is positioned as a portable laboratory for security experts and forensic analysts, focusing on tools for testing cloud systems and Internet of Things devices. It also includes cryptographic tools and programs for secure internet access, including TOR, I2P, anonsurf, gpg, tccf, zulucrypt, veracrypt, truecrypt, and luks.
In the new release:
- The transition to the Debian 12 package base has been completed.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.5 (from 6.0) with patches to enhance sniffing capabilities, packet injection, and support for information security-related technologies.
- Included are backported DKMS modules for kernel 6.5 with additional drivers for wireless cards, providing enhanced traffic analysis capabilities. NVIDIA drivers have been updated.
- Many specialized utilities have been updated.
- Python 3.11 is used by default.
- The graphical interface has been modernized.
- An experimental feature has been introduced to run unsupported utilities (for example, those incompatible with system libraries) in separate isolated containers.
- The GRUB bootloader has added the ability to boot in recovery mode (Fail-Safe).
- The installer has been updated, built on the Calamares framework.
- The distribution's sound system has been transitioned to use multimedia server Pipewire instead of PulseAudio.
- A fresh version of VirtualBox has been transferred from Debian Unstable.
- Support for the Raspberry Pi 5 board has been added.
Additionally, the release of Gnoppix Linux 24.1.15 is noteworthy, aimed at live mode operation for security researchers wishing to preserve privacy and leave no traces on the system after conducting experiments. The distribution is based on Debian and the developments of the Kali Linux project. The project has been evolving since 2003 and was previously based on the Live distribution Knoppix. Bootable builds have been prepared for x86_64 and i386 architectures (3.9 GB).
In the new version:
- The layout of elements in the graphical interface has been redesigned, now using Xfce 4.18. The Whiskermenu package is used as the application menu.
- An optional installation mode for local drives has been added, implemented using the Calamares installer (previously only Live boot was supported).
- Updated versions of the applications Mousepad 0.6.1, Paole 4.18.0, Ristretto 0.13.1, Thunar 4.18.6, Whiskermenu 2.8.0, LibreOffice 7.6.4, Gnoppix Productivity 1.0.2, Gnoppix Security 0.3, and Gnoppix Privacy 2.1. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.6.11.
- Improvements have been made to the tools for routing all traffic through the anonymous Tor network. In addition to the Tor browser, the package now includes the file-sharing program OnionShare and the messaging system Ricochet, integrated with Tor.
- The package now includes the cache and temporary files cleaning utility Sweeper, the disk partition encryption package VeraCrypt, and the metadata anonymization toolkit MAT (Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit).
