Release of DXVK 2.2, the implementation of Direct3D 9/10/11 over the Vulkan API

The release of the DXVK 2.2 layer is now available, providing an implementation of DXGI (DirectX Graphics Infrastructure), Direct3D 9, 10, and 11, working through call translation to the Vulkan API. To use DXVK, drivers supporting Vulkan API 1.3 are required, such as Mesa RADV 22.0, NVIDIA 510.47.03, Intel ANV 22.0, and AMDVLK. DXVK can be used to run 3D applications and games on Linux using Wine, acting as a higher-performance alternative to Wine's built-in implementations of Direct3D 9/10/11 that work on OpenGL.

Key Changes:

  • Support for the D3D11On12 layer has been added, allowing Direct3D 11 to run on top of Direct3D 12. To support D3D12 in new games based on the Unity engine, such as Lego Builder’s Journey, DXVK implements the capability to create D3D11 devices from D3D12 devices using the D3D11On12CreateDevice function and the ID3D11On12Device interface.
  • The Direct3D 9 implementation has gained support for Partial Presentation, allowing the rendering of parts of a window by copying the content of the backbuffer to system memory and subsequently rendering it in the window using the CPU. This feature improves compatibility with game launchers built using the Microsoft WPF framework, albeit at the cost of reduced performance. Additionally, the overall behavior of virtual framebuffers (SwapChain) in Direct3D 9 has been improved, and support for the d3d9.noExplicitFrontBuffer option has been discontinued.
  • When used with Proton or Wine, the creation of log files has been disabled by default, and diagnostic messages are now output to the console using Wine-specific capabilities, aligning with the behavior of vkd3d-proton. To resume the creation of separate log files, the environment variable DXVK_LOG_PATH can be set.
  • Memory consumption has been significantly reduced in situations where unused D3D11 devices are created in games.
  • On systems with multiple GPUs, the detection of output devices available through DXGI has been improved, addressing performance issues in new games based on the RE (Reach for the Moon) engine that utilize D3D12.
  • Issues manifesting in games have been addressed:
    • Battle Fantasia Revised Edition
    • Cold Fear
    • Dawn of Magic 2
    • DC Universe Online
    • Far Cry 2
    • Halo: The Master Chief Collection
    • Warhammer 40k: Space Marine
    • Jade Empire
    • Sid Meier’s Pirates
    • Total War: Shogun 2
