The release of Electron platform 19.0.0 has been prepared, providing a self-sufficient framework for developing cross-platform user applications, based on components from Chromium, V8, and Node.js. The significant version change is associated with the update to Chromium codebase 102, Node.js platform 16.14.2, and JavaScript engine V8 10.2.
Among the changes in the new release:
- The BrowserWindow method has been added, allowing you to change the button color, symbol color, and window height with the Window Controls Overlay (WCO) enabled.
- The nativeTheme.inForcedColorsMode API has been added to determine the activation of forced color mode.
- The ses.setCodeCachePath() API has been added to set the directory for code caching.
- It is now possible to close the window when the parent window is closed.
- Support for additional color formats has been added to setBackgroundColor.
- A warning about the default isolation of preload scripts has been added, starting from Electron 20.
- Support for the skipTaskbar option in the BrowserWindow constructor on Linux has been discontinued, as Window.is_skip_taskbar required unsafe mode while hiding from the taskbar was not supported in Wayland-based environments.
The Electron platform allows you to create any graphical applications using web technologies, with logic defined in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and functionality that can be extended through a plugin system. Notable applications built on the Electron platform include the Atom editor, Mailspring email client, GitKraken for Git, WordPress Desktop blogging system, WebTorrent Desktop BitTorrent client, as well as official clients for services such as Skype, Signal, Slack, Basecamp, Twitch, Ghost, Wire, Wrike, Visual Studio Code, and Discord. A total of 775 applications are represented in the Electron app catalog. To simplify the development of new applications, a set of standard demo applications has been prepared, including code examples for solving various tasks.
