The release of project 86Box 5.0 has been announced, developing an emulator for systems based on x86 architecture, which allows running old operating systems and applications, including those used in the early 1980s on IBM PC 5150 and IBM PS/2 computers. It supports precise low-level system emulation, starting from 8086 processors and up to Intel Celeron Mendocino. The project code is written in C and distributed under the GPLv2 license.
A graphical interface is provided for managing the operation, with customization options. of virtual machines. Emulation of various peripheral devices, such as video adapters, sound cards, network cards, and hard disk controllers, is available. Supported operating systems include MS-DOS, Windows 3.11/95, OS/2, various Linux distributions, BeOS, NEXTSTEP, and other older operating systems.
In the new release:
- A preliminary implementation of a built-in virtual machine manager has been introduced, providing an interface for managing emulation and running virtual environments without the need for additional configurators. The created virtual machines are saved in the directory "~/.local/share/86Box/Virtual Machines.
- Mouse movement and screen output have been improved, especially on monitors with a high refresh rate.
- The component for rendering has been completely rewritten using OpenGL 3.0, allowing the use of shader effects during display emulation. Support for the glslp shader format has been added, along with the capability to utilize multiple shaders and adjust shader parameters through the GUI.
