The release of the 86Box 6.0 project has been presented, which develops an emulator for systems based on the x86 architecture, allowing the execution of old operating systems and applications, including those used in the early 1980s on IBM PC 5150 and IBM PS/2 computers. Accurate low-level emulation of systems is supported, from 8086 processors to Intel Celeron Mendocino. The project's code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
A graphical interface is provided for managing the operation, with customization options. of virtual machinesEmulation of various peripheral devices is available, such as video adapters, sound cards, network cards, and hard disk controllers.
Among the supported operating systems are: MS-DOS, Windows 3.11/95, OS/2, various Linux distributions, BeOS, NEXTSTEP, and other older OS.
In the new release:
- The storage device emulator features sounds produced by hard drives during operation, such as the whirring of the spindle and clicking noises when moving heads.
- A virtual network switch has been implemented for network connections between several emulated systems running in different instances of 86Box.
- A turbo mode has been added that disables forced emulation performance limitations.
- A separate button for taking screenshots has been added to the toolbar. Besides saving the image to a file, commands have been implemented to save the screenshot to the clipboard and to create a screenshot without post-processing and scaling.
- A button has been added to reset the system directory to its original state.
- The user interface has been redesigned with tabbed settings windows. The section for configuring key combinations has been moved to the general system settings. Monitor settings have been moved to a separate page. A text search function has been added to device list windows.
- Indicators for DVD, audio CDs, tape drives, and write protection have been added to the status bar.
- A driver has been added for passing access to real devices with a serial port and to CD-ROM.
- Performance has been improved on hosts with ARM processors.
- Emulation of CPU NEC V20/V30 and video cards 3 ViRGE and Trio3D/2X has been enhanced.
- Emulation of sound cards Analog Devices AD1816, Aztech Sound Galaxy Pro 16 AZTPR16, Covox Sound Master, HP Multimedia Pro 16V-A, IBM Music Feature Card, MediaVision ThunderBoard, Pro Audio Spectrum, and TexElec SAAYM (CMS/Game Blaster + Yamaha OPM) with ISA bus, as well as external sound cards FTL Sound Adapter, SiliconSoft SoundJr, OPL2LPT, OPL3LPT, CMSLPT, and TNDLPT connected via parallel port has been implemented.
