After five months of development, version 4.8.31 of the console file manager Midnight Commander has been released, distributed in source code under the GPLv3+ license.
List of major changes:
- Support for the LZO/LZOP compression format has been added in VFS.
- The virtual file system uc1541, providing access to disk images of Commodore VIC20/C64/C128, has been updated to version 3.6.
- The implementation of the virtual file system s3+, used for accessing Amazon AWS S3 storage, has been ported to Python 3.
- Support for server and the FISH protocol.
- The requirements for the GLib version have been increased; now version 2.32.0 or higher is required.

- In the editor, the removal of selected columns has been streamlined.
- The issue with handling hard links has been resolved in Tar VFS.
- The issue with file names containing Cyrillic or diacritic characters has been resolved in Shell VFS.
