The release of the desktop-oriented distribution GhostBSD 26.01 has been announced, built on FreeBSD 15 and offering builds with the Gershwin, MATE, and Xfce desktop environments. By default, GhostBSD uses the ZFS file system. Both live mode and installation on hard disk are supported (utilizing the custom installer ginstall, written in Python). Boot images are created for the x86_64 architecture.
In the new version:
- The X.Org Server has been replaced with a fork called XLibre. The reasons for this replacement include the abandoned nature of the X.Org project and the loss of hope that it will ever emerge from stagnation, as Red Hat has shifted all efforts to implementing Wayland and intends to stop supporting X11 in GTK5. According to the maintainer of GhostBSD, the MATE, Xfce, and GNUstep projects are not yet ready for the transition to Wayland, and the actions of the X.Org maintainers appear destructive and irrational due to the removal of changes created by the author of XLibre.
- The transition to FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE has been made (previously the distribution was based on FreeBSD 14.2).
- By default, the zsh shell is now in use.
- Support for has been added to the NetworkMGR configurator VPN WireGuard and Enterprise WPA (802.1X/EAP).
- Support for updating between different major versions of boot environments has been added to the Update Station update manager.
- The theme and icon set have been updated.
