After six months of development, the release of the LXQt 0.17 user environment (Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment) took place, developed by a collaborative team from the LXDE and Razor-qt projects. The LXQt interface continues to follow the ideas of classic desktop organization, introducing modern design and techniques that enhance usability. LXQt is positioned as a lightweight, modular, fast, and user-friendly evolution of the Razor-qt and LXDE desktops, incorporating the best features of both environments. The code is hosted on GitHub and is distributed under the GPL 2.0+ and LGPL 2.1+ licenses. Pre-built packages are expected for Ubuntu (LXQt is offered by default in Lubuntu), Arch Linux, Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, FreeBSD, ROSA, and ALT Linux.
Release Features:
- The LXQt Panel now includes a 'Dock' mode, where automatic hiding is activated only when the panel intersects with a window.
- The PCManFM-Qt file manager now fully supports file creation times. The Tools menu has been enhanced with buttons for creating launchers and for enabling administrator mode, which uses GVFS to move files that are not covered by the current user’s permissions without requiring root privileges. Mixed file selection with different MIME types has been improved. Localization has been added for the file operation dialog. Thumbnail size limitations have been implemented. Natural keyboard navigation on the desktop has been realized.
- All child processes are ensured to terminate at the end of the session, allowing applications not included in LXQt to save their data at the end of the session and avoid crashes on exit.
- The efficiency of processing SVG format vector icons has been increased.
- In the LXQt Power Manager interface, tracking of idle state has been separated between battery and mains power. A setting has been added to disable idle tracking when an active window is maximized.
- In the QTerminal terminal emulator and QTermWidget widget, five background image output modes have been implemented, and a setting has been added to disable automatic quotation of data pasted from the clipboard. The default action after pasting from the clipboard has been changed to 'scroll down.'
- In the LXImage Qt image viewer, thumbnail generation settings have been added, along with an option to disable image resizing during navigation.
- The LXQt Archiver has been updated to support opening and extracting data from image files. Window parameters are now preserved, and horizontal scrolling has been implemented in the sidebar.
- The notification output system now handles summary information about notifications in plain text format only.
- Translation efforts have been moved to the Weblate platform. A discussion forum has been launched on GitHub.
Work continues on the release of LXQt 1.0.0, which will provide full support for operating over Wayland.
