Release of wxWidgets 3.1.4 graphical toolkit

Took place release of a cross-platform toolkit wxWidgets 3.1.4, allowing the creation of graphical interfaces for Linux, Windows, macOS, UNIX, and mobile platforms. wxWidgets 3.1 is positioned as a branch for developers, where new features are developed for the next stable release, 3.2.0. Compared to branch 3.0, there are several API incompatibilities, and ABI stability between the intermediate releases 3.1.x is not guaranteed.

The toolkit is written in C++ and distributed under a free license wxWindows Library License, approved by the Free Software Foundation and the OSI organization. The license is based on LGPL and differs by allowing the use of proprietary terms for distributing derivative works in binary form. In addition to developing programs in C/C++, wxWidgets provides bindings for most popular programming languages, including PHP, Python, Perl and Ruby. Unlike other toolkits, wxWidgets provides a truly native appearance and interaction methods for the application on the target system, thanks to the use of system APIs rather than GUI emulation.

Key innovations:

  • A new build system based on CMake. The build system has added support for new compilers (MSVC 2019, g++ 10) and operating systems (macOS 10.14 and macOS 11 for ARM);
  • A new experimental wxQt port;
  • Revamped OpenGL support, improved usage of new OpenGL versions (3.2+);
  • Added support for events for control gestures produced using the mouse;
  • In wxFont and wxGraphicsContext, the ability to specify non-integer values for font sizes and pen width has been added;
  • In wxStaticBox, the ability to assign arbitrary labels to windows has been implemented;
  • Improved support for high pixel density screens (High DPI);
  • Added support for LZMA compression and ZIP 64 files;
  • New classes introduced: wxActivityIndicator, wxAddRemoveCtrl,
    wxAppProgressIndicator, wxNativeWindow, wxPowerResourceBlocker,
    wxSecretStore and wxTempFFile;
  • Added support for freezing columns and rows in wxGrid;
  • New methods introduced: wxDataViewToggleRenderer::ShowAsRadio(), wxDateTime::
    GetWeekBasedYear(), wxDisplay::GetPPI(), wxGrid::SetCornerLabelValue(),
    wxHtmlEasyPrinting::SetPromptMode(), wxJoystickEvent::GetButtonOrdinal(),
    wxListBox::GetTopItem(), wxProcess::Activate(), wxTextEntry::ForceUpper(), wxStandardPaths::GetUserDir(),
    wxToolbook::EnablePage(), wxUIActionSimulator::Select();
  • Significant improvements have been made in the classes wxBusyInfo, wxDataViewCtrl,
    wxNotificationMessage, wxStaticBox, wxStyledTextCtrl, and wxUIActionSimulator;
  • Enhanced security during the compilation stage, allowing the disabling of dangerous implicit conversions between wxString and "char*" types.
  • All included third-party libraries have been updated. Support for WebKit 2 and GStreamer 1.7 has been added.
  • Improvements related to C++11 standard support have been made. Compiler support for C++20 has been added.
  • A large number of fixes have been made for the wxGTK3 and wxOSX/Cocoa ports.
