The release of the Live distribution grml 2025.05 has been presented, offering a selection of tools for tasks encountered in the practice of system administrators, such as data recovery after a failure and incident analysis. The distribution is based on the Debian GNU/Linux package base and celebrated its twentieth anniversary last year. The graphical environment is built using the Fluxbox window manager. By default, the Zsh shell is offered. The size of the full ISO image is 960 MB, and the slim version is 536 MB.
In the new release:
- The packages have been synchronized with the Debian Testing repository as of May 14. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.12.
- The grml-hwinfo, grml-keyring, and grml-paste packages, created by the Grml developers, have been included in Debian.
- A new digital signature is used for packages distributed via the deb.grml.org repository.
- In the toolkit for building Live editions, the FAI package has been replaced with the minifai utility, which was developed in-house. Settings have been migrated from /etc/grml/fai/config to /usr/share/grml-live/config.
- In the full build, the option 'ssh=' has been set during boot to announce the SSH service using Avahi.
- The grml-autoconfig boot process has undergone performance optimization and has dropped support for systems without systemd.
- In the grml-hwinfo utility, which provides information about hardware, the collection of disk status information using the smartctl utility is now performed in JSON format.
- Support for the i386 architecture and Debian releases 8 and 9 has been discontinued in grml-debootstrap. Enhanced support for ARM systems with UEFI has been introduced.
- Included packages: ipxe, iwd, links, lrzsz, sopv-gpgv, and sqv.
- Discontinued packages: acpi-support, acpi-support-base, acpid, apt-utils, cdebootstrap, cron, cron-daemon-common, crosshurd, debconf-i18n, debconf-utils, dnsutils (replaced by bind9-dnsutils), fai-client, init, nftables, rsyslog, and vim-tiny.
