After a year and a half of development, a stable release of the composite server Weston 10.0 has been published, advancing technologies that support full Wayland protocol compatibility in Enlightenment, GNOME, KDE, and other user environments. The development of Weston aims to provide a high-quality codebase and working examples for using Wayland in desktop environments and embedded solutions, such as platforms for automotive infotainment systems, smartphones, televisions, and other consumer devices. The project's code is distributed under the MIT license.
The change in the significant version number of Weston is due to ABI changes that break compatibility. Changes in the new branch of Weston:
- Components for color management have been added, allowing for color transformation, gamma correction, and working with color profiles. Changes are currently limited to internal subsystems, with user-visible color management tools expected in the next release.
- The implementation of the linux-dmabuf-unstable-v1 protocol, enabling the sharing of multiple graphics cards using DMA-BUF technology, has introduced the 'dma-buf feedback' mechanism, providing the compositor server with additional information about the available GPUs and allowing for improved data exchange efficiency between the primary and secondary GPUs. For instance, 'dma-buf feedback' support expands the applicability of zero-copy scanout.
- Support for the libseat library has been added, providing functions for managing access to shared input and output devices, eliminating the need for root permissions (access coordination is managed by a separate background process, seatd). Future releases plan to replace all components for launching Weston with libseat.
- All examples of client applications have been updated to use the xdg-shell protocol extension, which provides an interface for interacting with surfaces as if they were windows, allowing surfaces to be moved across the screen, minimized, maximized, resized, etc.
- Automatic execution of client software after startup has been added, for example, to enable auto-launching applications upon login.
- The wl_shell interface, fbdev backend, and the weston-launch utility have been declared deprecated (use seatd-launch or logind-launch to start).
- Dependency requirements have been increased; libdrm 2.4.95, libwayland 1.18.0, and wayland-protocols 1.24 are now required for building. For building the remote access plugin based on PipeWire, libpipewire 0.3 is required.
- The test suite has been expanded.
