Release of the Composite Server Weston 14.0

After nine months of development, a stable release of the composite server Weston 14.0 has been published, advancing technologies that support full Wayland protocol integration in Enlightenment, GNOME, KDE, and other desktop environments. The development of Weston aims to provide a high-quality codebase and working examples for using Wayland in desktop environments and embedded solutions such as platforms for automotive infotainment systems, smartphones, televisions, and other consumer devices. The project's code is distributed under the MIT license.

Changes in the new branch of Weston:

  • Support for hardware underlay for graphical element overlay has been added to the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) backend. Atomic asynchronous switching between two memory video buffers (atomic async flip) has been enabled.
  • A ‘mirror-of’ configuration setting has been added for organizing output mirroring.
  • Support for DmaBuf technology has been added to the Pipewire multimedia server output backend.
  • The simple-egl client now allows the use of translucent surfaces with a 16-bit color representation. An option to use the EGL extension EGL_EXT_present_opaque has been added. Support for surface compression has been implemented.
  • Support for FreeRDP 3.x has been added to the RDP protocol output backend.
  • The VNC output backend now allows the disabling of TLS and the use of a password for authentication in non-TLS mode.
  • Support for the Wayland protocol extension for color management has been added to libweston. The ability to limit the pointer movement area on fullscreen surfaces has been implemented.
  • The OpenGL rendering component (gl-renderer) has added support for capturing OpenGL ES 3 and OpenGL ES 2 output in asynchronous mode, as well as the ability to change object colors using a shader.
