After five months of development, a stable release of the composite server Weston 16.0 has been published, advancing technologies that enable full support for the Wayland protocol in Enlightenment, GNOME, KDE, and other user environments. The development of Weston aims to provide a high-quality codebase and working examples for using Wayland in desktop environments and embedded solutions such as platforms for automotive infotainment systems, smartphones, televisions, and other consumer devices. The project's code is distributed under the MIT license.
Changes in the new branch of Weston:
- Support for debug annotations has been added when using the Perfetto profiler to identify performance issues during rendering, as well as to track and visualize the execution time of various operations.
- The implementation of tools for HDR support and color management is ongoing, using the Wayland protocol color-representation.
- A shader for mixing layers has been added to renderer-gl.
- Support for compressed pixel formats YUV has been added.
- Support for a grayscale output effect has been added to the compositor.
- Support for the Wayland protocol alpha-modifier has been added, allowing clients to change the transparency level of a surface and delegate transparency operations to the compositor, serverwhich in turn can redirect these operations to KMS.
- In the backend for interacting with the DRM subsystem (Direct Rendering Manager) of the Linux kernel, support for the following parameters has been implemented:
- "background color" to change the background light color on display controllers that support this feature.
- "blend mode" — for alpha blending of pixels on the display controller's side when rendering the current layer over lower layers.
- "color format" for selecting the color format (RGB, YUV) used for outputting to the monitor.
- An API has been added to libweston for retrieving the list of touch devices.
- Work has been done to clean up duplicate functionality, replaced by backends and shells. Support for screenshooter, the backend for recording via VA-API, the screenshare frontend for screen sharing, and the fullscreen shell fullscreen-shell has been removed. Non-atomic KMS, drm_virtual_output_api, Wayland protocol xdg-shell-v6, as well as the pipewire and remoting plugins have been declared deprecated.
