The release of labwc 0.8.0 (Lab Wayland Compositor) has been published, which develops a compositing server for Wayland with features reminiscent of the Openbox window manager (the project is presented as an attempt to create an alternative to Openbox for Wayland). Features of labwc include minimalism, a compact implementation, extensive customization options, and high performance. Animated effects, gradients, and icons, except for window buttons, are not supported by design. The project's code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
The foundation uses the wlroots library, developed by the Sway desktop environment developers, and provides the basic functions for operating a compositor manager based on Wayland. It is possible to connect plugins that implement features such as taking screenshots, displaying wallpapers on the desktop, and placing panels and menus. To run X11 applications in a Wayland-based environment, the use of the XWayland DDX component is supported. The theme, basic menu, and hotkeys are customizable through configuration files in XML format. There is built-in support for high-density pixel screens (HiDPI).
In addition to the built-in root menu, configurable through the menu.xml file, you can connect third-party application menu implementations such as bemenu, fuzzel, and wofi. Waybar, sfwbar, Yambar, or LavaLauncher can be used as a panel. For managing monitor connections and changing their settings, it is recommended to use wlr-randr or kanshi. Screen locking is done using swaylock.
In the new version:
- Support for the new release of the wlroots library 0.18 has been provided.
- The setting <core><allowTearing> has been updated with options <fullscreen> and <fullscreenForced> to bind the application of tearing prevention only to windows that are maximized.
- The keyboard shortcut settings have added the <keyboard><keybind key="" allowWhenLocked=""> option, which allows the handler to be invoked while the session is locked, which can be useful for enabling hotkeys for volume control during a lock.
- The parameter <resistance><unSnapThreshold> has been added to define the threshold for movement triggering for tiled and maximized windows.
