The release of Lanemu P2P VPN 0.14 has taken place — a decentralized virtual private network operating on a Peer-To-Peer principle, where participants connect directly to each other instead of through a central server. Network participants can find each other through BitTorrent trackers or BitTorrent DHT, or through other participants (peer exchange). The application is a free and open-source alternative to Hamachi VPN, written in Java (with some components in C) and distributed under the GNU LGPL 3.0 license. It supports running on Windows, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, and Mac OS.
Changes in version 0.14:
- Support for the RUDP (Reliable User Datagram Protocol) has been added as a replacement for TCP. RUDP is enabled by default with the option for 'old' peers to connect via TCP. Now two UDP ports 'n' and 'n + 1' are used for UDP respectively, and port 'n' for old TCP connections. A modified RUDP library is utilized with multiplexing support (client operation and server one UDP port) to bypass NAT.
- The default port is set to 5521 instead of 0, where the number was selected randomly.
- Support for the STUN protocol has been added to retrieve external UDP ports and an IP address peers. By default, 'stun.l.google.com:19302' is used as the STUN server; alternatively, you can specify another STUN server, such as 'stun.voipcheap.com:3478' in case of issues.
- A message display has been added to indicate the application's status during lengthy synchronous operations (such as invitation generation).
- The manifest of the executable files has been edited so that the application always runs as an administrator.
- Automatic installation of the tap driver has been added when the application is started on Windows.
- An invitation check has been added when specified in headless mode.
- A socket timeout setting has been added for connection.
- Application builds are separated for each version of Windows.
