The developers of the LineageOS project, which succeeded CyanogenMod after Cyanogen Inc. abandoned the project, have introduced LineageOS 18.1, based on the Android 11 platform. Version 18.1 was built skipping 18.0 due to the specific tagging requirements in the repository.
It is noted that the LineageOS 18 branch has achieved parity in functionality and stability with the 17 branch and is deemed ready for the first release. Builds have been prepared for over 140 devices. Instructions for launching LineageOS 18.1 in the Android Emulator and Android Studio have been provided. Support for building for Android TV has been added. During installation for all supported devices, the proprietary Lineage Recovery is offered by default, which does not require a separate recovery partition. The formation of LineageOS 16 builds has been discontinued.
Compared to LineageOS 17, in addition to changes specific to Android 11, several improvements have also been proposed:
- Transitioned to the android-11.0.0_r32 branch from the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) repository. The WebView browser engine has been synchronized with Chromium 89.0.4389.105.
- Support for wireless monitors (Wi-Fi Display) has been added for new devices based on Qualcomm chips.
- The capabilities of the Recorder program have been significantly expanded, allowing it to serve as a voice recorder, for creating voice notes, and for recording screencasts. The screen recording function has been moved to the quick settings section to align with Android. A new interface has been added for viewing, managing, and sharing voice notes. The ability to change sound quality settings has been introduced. Buttons for pausing and resuming recording have been implemented.
- The standard Android calendar has been replaced with a proprietary fork of the Etar planner calendar.
- A backup application, Seedvault, has been added, allowing for the creation of encrypted backups on a schedule, which can be uploaded to external storage based on the Nextcloud platform, to a USB drive, or stored in internal storage. To use Seedvault, the backup provider should be changed through the Settings menu -> System -> Backup.
- For older devices without A/B partitions, an option has been added to update the recovery image alongside the operating system (Settings -> System -> (Show More) Updater -> menu '...' in the upper right corner -> 'Update recovery alongside OS')
- The interface of the Eleven music player has been updated. All new Android features for music applications have been implemented, including the ability to change playback position from the notifications area.
- Support for a dark theme has been added across all applications.
- A new colorful interface has been introduced in recovery, making it more user-friendly.
- The firewall now includes the ability to block all connections for a selected application (the application will think the device is in airplane mode).
- A new volume control dialog has been added, allowing adjustment of volume for different streams.
- The interface for creating cropped screenshots has been improved. The instant screenshot feature introduced in Android 11 has been integrated.
- Support for choosing icon sets has been added to the Trebuchet Launcher application launcher interface.
- To ensure compatibility with third-party solutions for enabling root access, ADB root has been redesigned.
