After ten months of development, the FFmpeg 4.4 multimedia package is available, including a set of applications and a collection of libraries for handling various multimedia formats (recording, converting, and decoding audio and video formats). The package is distributed under LGPL and GPL licenses, and the development of FFmpeg is conducted alongside the MPlayer project.
Key changes in FFmpeg 4.4 include:
- Implemented the ability to use the VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation) API for hardware acceleration of video decoding in HEVC/H.265 (10/12bit) and VP9 (10/12bit) formats.
- Support is provided for decoding AV1 video using NVIDIA NVDEC and Intel QSV (Quick Sync Video) hardware acceleration engines, as well as via the DXVA2/D3D11VA API.
- Added the capability to encode AV1 in monochrome mode, using the libaom library (version 2.0.1 or higher required).

- Support for the RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport) protocol has been added, using librist.
- Support for the encoder based on libwavpack has been removed.
