The release of the lightweight music player Audacious 4.5 has been announced. This version branched off from the Beep Media Player (BMP) project, which itself was a fork of the classic XMMS player. The release comes with two user interfaces: one based on GTK and the other on Qt. Ready builds will soon be prepared for various Linux distributions (snap, flatpak, PPA) and for Windows.
Key innovations of Audacious 4.5:
- The GTK-based builds include a volume visualization plugin (VU Meter).
- A playback history viewer plugin has been added (currently available only in the Qt version).
- Both the Qt and GTK versions offer parity in the functionality of the 'Jump to Song' dialog.
- Support for loading tags with album author information from APEv2 format metadata has been added.
- For Opus files, support for tags containing information for volume normalization (ReplayGain) has been restored.
- The multimedia output plugin has been improved. server PipeWire.
- Support for extracting lyrics from the lrclib.net service has been added.
- A dark mode based on the corresponding GNOME settings has been implemented.
- For Winamp skins, the drawing of switch states has been realized.
- Additional skins Glare and Winamp 2.9 have been included.
- A setting for the action when clicking the middle mouse button on the status icon has been added.
- The unsupported experimental plugin Moonstone has been removed.
- When importing a playlist, a new list is created in a separate tab instead of overwriting the current one.
- The FFmpeg plugin has announced support for AAC format files.
- An informational dialog has been implemented in the MPRIS plugin.
- On systems with PipeWire and PulseAudio support, the PipeWire plugin is enabled by default.
- Support for output via the SDL3 library has been added to the SDL plugin. Support for SDL1 has been discontinued.
- Icons in the configurator have been changed.
