As our experts predicted, on the last day of spring, another release of the NixOS Linux OS distribution version 24.05 was published, code-named “Uakari”. NixOS features a declarative approach to software installation, allowing users to describe the desired state of the OS in a specialized configuration language called Nix, and includes such features as atomic system updates and reproducibility of builds.
Notable changes in release 24.05 include:
- 17777 new packages have been added, 16249 have been updated, and 9393 outdated packages have been removed;
- The release was developed by 2491 contributors;
- GNOME has been updated to version 46, KDE to version 6.0 (5.27 LTS is also available for installation), MATE to version 1.28, and Cinnamon to version 6.0;
- Support for the Lomiri desktop environment (formerly Unity 8), which uses the Mir window compositor, has been added;
- By default, the Linux kernel 6.6 is offered, but kernels starting from version 4.19 are also available.
