Version 1.4 of the P2P messenger Communist has been released. The source code is written in C++ and is distributed (GitHub, GitFlic) under the GPLv3 license. The graphical interface is built on the GTK 4 library. It supports operation on Linux and Windows operating systems. Pre-packaged binaries are prepared for Arch Linux (AUR) and distributions based on the tenth platform Alt Linux.
Communist is a simple P2P messenger designed to work both over the Internet and in local networks of various configurations. To establish a connection between users, it uses a combination of a distributed hash table (specifically a DHT variant intended for torrent clients) and UDP hole punching techniques (to interact with hosts behind address translators). Both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols are supported. All data is stored on the user's machine in an encrypted form and is also transmitted encrypted. Standard AES encryption and the ed25519 digital signature scheme are employed.
Among the changes in the new version:
- STUN server functionality has been added.
- The ability to enable custom dictionaries for spell checking without changing the source code has been added.
- The translation system has been reorganized.
- The appearance of the program has been redesigned: two themes are available by default.
- The ability to create custom themes without changing the source code has been added.
