The release of Lutris platform 0.5.9 simplifies access to games from Linux.

After nearly a year of development, the Lutris 0.5.9 gaming platform has been released, providing tools to simplify the installation, configuration, and management of games on Linux. The project's code is written in Python and is distributed under the GPLv3 license.

The project maintains a catalog for quick search and installation of gaming applications, allowing users to launch games on Linux with a single click without worrying about dependencies and configurations. The runtime components required to run games are provided by the project and are independent of the distribution used. The runtime is a distribution-agnostic set of libraries, including components from SteamOS and Ubuntu, as well as various additional libraries.

It allows for the installation of games distributed through services like GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Origin, and Uplay. Lutris itself acts merely as an intermediary and does not sell games, so users must purchase commercial games from the respective service (free games can be launched with a single click from the Lutris graphical interface).

Each game in Lutris is associated with a loading script and handler describing the environment for launching the game. Ready-made profiles with optimal settings for running games under Wine are also provided. In addition to Wine, games can be launched using console emulators such as RetroArch, Dosbox, FS-UAE, ScummVM, MESS/MAME, and Dolphin.

Key innovations in Lutris 0.5.9:

  • For games running with Wine and DXVK or VKD3D, support for AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology has been added, which reduces quality loss when scaling on high-resolution displays. To use FSR, installation of lutris-wine with FShack patches is required. Game resolution can be set to a different value than the screen resolution in the game settings (for example, setting 1080p on a 1440p screen).
  • Preliminary support for DLSS technology has been implemented, allowing the use of NVIDIA GPU Tensor cores for realistic image scaling using machine learning methods to increase resolution without quality loss. DLSS operation is not guaranteed due to the lack of a necessary RTX card for testing.
  • Support for installing games from the Epic Games Store catalog has been added through client integration from Epic.
  • Support for the Dolphin game console emulator has been added as a source for installing games.
  • The ability to use the Windows version of Steam running through Wine, instead of the native Linux version of Steam, as a source for installing games has been added. This option may be useful for running games with CEG DRM protection, such as Duke Nukem Forever, The Darkness 2, and Aliens Colonial Marines.
  • Improved support for detecting and automatically installing games from the GOG service that use Dosbox or ScummVM.
  • Integration with the Steam service has been improved: Lutris now detects games installed through Steam and allows launching Lutris games from Steam. Locale issues when launching Lutris from Steam have been resolved.
  • Support for gamescope has been added, a compositor and window manager using the Wayland protocol, implemented in the Steam Deck gaming console. Future releases are expected to continue work on supporting the Steam Deck and creating a special user interface for use on this gaming console.
  • The ability to separately enable implementations of Direct3D VKD3D and DXVK has been provided.
  • Support for the Esync (Eventfd Synchronization) mechanism is enabled by default to improve the performance of multi-threaded games.
  • The 7zip utility is now used by default for extracting archives.
  • Due to issues in some games, the AMD Switchable Graphics Layer, which allows switching between the Vulkan drivers AMDVLK and RADV, has been disabled.
  • Support for Gallium 9, X360CE, and old WineD3D options has been removed.
