A year after the publication of the last significant release, the release of the Thunderbird 91 mail client, developed by community forces and based on Mozilla technologies, has been published. The new release is categorized as a long-term support release, with updates released throughout the year. Thunderbird 91 is based on the Firefox 91 ESR release codebase. The release is available as a direct download only, automatic upgrade from past releases to version 91.0 is not provided and will only be generated in version 91.2.
Major changes:
- A PDF viewer (PDF.js) is integrated into the main structure.
- By default, multi-process mode (e10s) is enabled, which means that tabs are processed in different processes.
- A new user interface has been proposed for attaching attachments to emails. Redesigned printout interface.

Support for automatic detection of external calendars has been added, an item for starting editing has been added to the context menu, category colors have been shown in drop-down lists, the ability to launch ics files by double clicking has been added, support for importing sorting and filtering parameters has been implemented. Added separate global and calendar-bound notification settings.
- When connecting to the GMail calendar and address book, the request for the permissions required to save the bindings, allowing access without re-authorization, has been implemented.
- Added support for undoing changes (Undo/Redo) to the Tasks scheduler for creating or deleting events and tasks.
- For political correctness, "Master Password" has been renamed to "Primary Password".
- The "Add-ons" section has been renamed to "Add-ons and Themes", and the "Options" section has been renamed to "Preferences".
- The account settings interface has been moved to a tab. UI Customization options have been moved to the View menu.
- The color scheme of the sidebar with the list of mail folders has been redesigned.
- Provided display of error messages issued when accessing server SMTP.
- Support for the Movemail program and the WeTransfer FileLink provider has been discontinued.
- Reduced launch time due to delayed loading of modules with chat and additional widgets.
- In chat, the IRC server is replaced by default with "libera.chat".
