The release of the PorteuX 2.5 distribution, based on Slackware and inspired by the Slax and Porteus projects, is now available. Notable features of PorteuX include preconfigured environments based on the Cinnamon, COSMIC, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, and Xfce desktop environments, hardware acceleration for multimedia file processing on Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs, a 3-second boot time in Live mode, a read-only system image with pre-installed applications from the PorteuX App Store, support for rollback of updates, a RAM boot mode (copy2ram), and network boot capabilities. The project has produced 8 editions, with sizes around 600 MB (the KDE edition is 656 MB, Xfce is 543 MB, and GNOME is 576 MB).
Key changes:
- The creation of stable builds has been discontinued in favor of continuously updated versions based on Slackware Current.
- Support for installing packages in the Flatpak format and using the Flathub directory has been added.
- Versions have been updated, including Linux kernel 6.18.2, NVIDIA driver 590.48.01, Cinnamon 6.6.3, COSMIC 1.0, GNOME 49.2, KDE Plasma 6.5.4.
- The 002-gui module has been enhanced with flatpak and intel-media-driver (which includes hardware acceleration for video on new Intel GPUs). The ensurepip package has been added to the 001-core module.
- Support for some Realtek network cards has been added.
- A patch for reporting the usage of X11 or Wayland has been added to LXQt.
- Support for SYSRQ has been included in the kernel.
- A set of symbolic icons, xapp-symbolic-icons, has been added to Cinnamon.
- The appstream and libfyaml packages have been removed from the KDE Plasma build, and mate-themes has been removed from the MATE build.
- The Openbox settings have been improved in LXDE.
- Support for the Vulkan graphic API has been enhanced (issues with some games in Steam have been resolved).
- Support for the zram option in /porteux/porteux.cfg has been established.
- The installer now works with NTFS3 partitions.
