The release of the optical character recognition program dpScreenOCR 1.5.0, which uses Tesseract, has taken place. Pre-built binaries are available for Linux and Windows (package repositories for Debian and Ubuntu are also available). The code of the program is written in C++ and is distributed under the zlib license.
dpScreenOCR allows capturing an arbitrary area of the screen using a global hotkey and mouse, from which the text will be recognized. Depending on the user's choice, the program can copy the recognized text to the clipboard, add it to the history, or send it to an external application.
Key changes in the new version:
- Language Manager:
- The language list now includes a column for the size of the language file.
- Text has been added showing the number and size of selected languages.
- The title of the 'Update' tab now shows the number of languages available for update.
- A 'Settings' tab has been added, which includes:
- Hotkey editor.
- A 'User Interface' group with a checkbox to control the visibility of the icon in the notification area. If enabled, it is also possible to select the option to hide the program window in the notification area when minimized or closed.
- Behavior group.
- A checkbox for playing a sound upon completion of recognition. If enabled, it is also possible to choose your audio file to play instead of the built-in sound.
- A checkbox for automatically checking for updates when the program starts. By default, updates are checked no more than once a week; this interval can be changed in the settings file, as described in the 'Configuration' section of the user manual.
- A checkbox for automatically starting the program (hidden in the notification area) upon logging in.
- A 'Check for Updates' button has been added to the 'About' tab.
- A command line interface has been added with the options '--help', '--hide', '--version', and the 'autostart' command.
- Tesseract has been updated to version 5.5.1.
- The TAR.XZ package for Linux includes the English language for recognition. It will be installed automatically only for those who run dpScreenOCR for the first time.
- Support for 16-bit color screen modes on X11 systems has been removed.
