Valve Corporation is releasing the project build , which is based on the developments of the Wine project and aims to enable the launch of gaming applications created for Windows on Linux, available in the Steam catalog. The project's developments are licensed under the BSD license. As original Wine and related projects, such as DXVK and vkd3d, become ready, the changes developed in Proton are ported.
Proton allows direct launching of Windows-only gaming applications in the Linux version of Steam. The package includes an implementation of DirectX 10/11 (based on ) and 12 (based on ), which operate through the translation of DirectX calls to the Vulkan API, providing improved support for gaming controllers and the ability to use fullscreen mode regardless of the screen resolutions supported in games. Compared to the original Wine, the performance of multithreaded games has significantly increased due to the application of patches ‘’ (Eventfd Synchronization).
Key :
- The DXVK layer (implementation of DXGI, Direct3D 10, and Direct3D 11 over the Vulkan API) has been updated to version 1.1.1, which added support for storing shader code in compressed memory and improved performance in various games, especially those built on the Unreal Engine 4.
- Fixed a crash when launching the game RAGE 2 (an up-to-date experimental version of Mesa is required for running on AMD GPU systems);
- Enhanced support for the Vulkan graphics API, ensuring compatibility with the Vulkan build of the game 'No Man's Sky';
- Improved icons for certain window managers;
- Corrected an issue that caused the Wine process to hang when updating the Proton version;
- Resolved issues with game controller detection in Yakuza Kiwami and Telltale games;
