Release of the anonymous network I2P 2.0.0

The release of the anonymous network I2P 2.0.0 and the C++ client i2pd 2.44.0 has occurred. I2P is a multi-layered anonymous distributed network that operates over the regular internet, actively utilizing end-to-end encryption to ensure anonymity and isolation. The network is built in a P2P manner and is formed through the resources (bandwidth) provided by network users, which allows it to operate without centralized managed servers (communications within the network are based on encrypted one-way tunnels between participants and peers).

In the I2P network, users can create websites and blogs anonymously, send instant messages and emails, share files, and organize P2P networks. To build and use anonymous networks for client-server (websites, chats) and P2P (file sharing, cryptocurrencies) applications, I2P clients are used. The basic I2P client is written in Java and can run on a wide range of platforms, such as Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris, etc. I2pd is an independent implementation of the I2P client in C++ and is distributed under a modified BSD license.

In I2P 2.0 and i2pd 2.44, a new transport protocol 'SSU2', based on UDP and distinguished by enhanced performance and security, is enabled by default for all users. The implementation of SSU2 will allow for a complete update of the cryptographic stack, eliminating the use of the very slow ElGamal algorithm (instead of ElGamal/AES+SessionTag, the combination ECIES-X25519-AEAD-Ratchet is used for end-to-end encryption), reducing overhead compared to the SSU protocol and improving performance on mobile devices.

Other changes in I2P 2.0 include the implementation of proxy authentication based on SHA-256 hashes (RFC 7616) in i2ptunnel. The SSU2 protocol implementation has added support for connection migration and instant acknowledgments of data receipt. Improvements have been made to the deadlock detector. An option for compressing the router logs has been added.

Version i2pd 2.44 has introduced the ability to use SSL-connections for tunnels with the I2P server. It has implemented the ability to proxy the protocols SSU2 and NTCP2 (IPv6) through SOCKS5. MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) settings for the SSU2 protocol (ssu2.mtu4 and ssu2.mtu6) have been added.
