The developers of the Slackel distribution, built on the foundations of the Slackware and Salix projects, have released a version with the MATE desktop environment, complementing the previously published environment based on the Openbox window manager. The distribution is based on the constantly updated Slackware-Current branch and is fully compatible with Slackware and Salix repositories. The size of the bootable image, which can operate in Live mode, is 2.9 GB (i386 and x86_64).
The new release is synchronized with the current branch of Slackware, includes a fresh set of salixtools utilities from the Salix project, and ships with Linux kernel 6.6. Updated versions of programs such as Firefox 121.0.1, Thunderbird 115.6.1, LibreOffice 7.6.2, GIMP 2.10.36, SMTube 21.10.0, SMPlayer 23.12.0, MPV 0.34.1, MPlayer 20221009, Exaile 4.1.1, Brasero 3.12.2, IsoMaster 1.3.13, Pidgin 2.14.12, and Transmission 2.94 have been included. Support for packages in flatpak format has been implemented.
The MATE environment utilizes graphical utilities developed for Slackel: instonusb (installation on USB drive), multibootusb (organization of multiple system booting from USB drive), SLI (Slackel Live Installer for installation on external or internal storage), install-upgrade-kernel-ext-usb-gtk (kernel upgrade for installations on USB drive), install-upgrade-kernel-gtk (kernel upgrade on local storage).
