Icecast 2.5.0 has been released, a server for streaming audio and video over the network. It supports broadcasting using formats such as Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Theora, Opus, FLAC, WebM (VP8/VP9), as well as proprietary codecs like MP4 (H.264, MPEG4), M4A, NSV, AAC, and MP3. The code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
The platform was created as an alternative to the proprietary Shoutcast system and gained significant popularity in the early 2000s for creating internet radio stations. Concurrently, the project develops the libshout library for interaction with Icecast-based servers and the IceS program for sending audio streams to servers Icecast. Development is supervised by the Xiph.Org Foundation.
The last significant branch, Icecast 2.4, was published in 2014. Changes in Icecast 2.5 include:
- Modernized web interface.
- Added support for roles in the administration interface.
- An experimental dark theme has been introduced.
- Support for transmitting events about the number of connected clients has been added.
- Support for the 'X-Forwarded-For' header has been added to pass information about the original request's IP address after forwarding the connection through a virtual network socket.
