The Apache Software Foundation has released the web conferencing server Apache OpenMeetings 6.0, which allows for audio and video conferences via the web, as well as collaboration and messaging between participants. It supports webinars with a single presenter, as well as conferences with any number of participants interacting simultaneously. The project code is written in Java and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
Additional features include tools for integration with a calendar scheduler, sending individual or bulk notifications and invitations, shared access to files and documents, maintaining a participant address book, keeping meeting minutes, collaborative task planning, streaming the output of running applications (screencast demonstrations), and conducting polls and surveys.
One server It can service an arbitrary number of conferences held in separate virtual conference rooms and including its own set of participants. The server supports flexible management tools and a powerful conference moderation system. Management and interaction between participants is conducted through a web interface. The OpenMeetings code is written in Java. MySQL and PostgreSQL can be used as the DBMS.
In the new release:
- The ability to execute load tests and generate metrics for performance tracking using the Prometheus monitoring system has been added.
- The user interface related to conference management has been broken down into separate components and transitioned to a build using the NPM package manager, with dependency management via NPM. The development process has become more convenient for frontend developers using JavaScript.
- Changes have been made to enhance the security of audio and video conferencing processes, as well as to provide screen sharing using WebRTC technology. The TLS 1.2 protocol is used for OAuth. The ability to set limits for the NetTest client (connection quality test) and overall restrictions on the number of clients has been added. CAPTCHA output settings have been implemented. An option to disable recording has been added.
- Efforts have been made to increase the stability of audio and video broadcasts.
- The user interface for notifications uses the Web Notification API, allowing for the use of system notification mechanisms on the desktop. Translations have been improved. The invitation sending form now displays the user’s time zone. The ability to pin and adjust the size of blocks with conference participants' videos has been added.
