Two years after the last release, the Zentyal 8.1 Linux server distribution has been published, built on the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS package base and specializing in creating servers for servicing the local networks of small and medium businesses. Among other things, the distribution is positioned as an alternative to Windows Server and includes components for replacing Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange Server services. The size of the ISO image is 4.5 GB. A commercial edition of the distribution is available separately, but packages with Zentyal components are accessible to Ubuntu users through the Universe repository.
Management of the distribution is performed through a web interface, which comprises about 40 modules for managing the network, network services, office proxy server and components of the enterprise infrastructure. Rapid organization of network gateway, firewall, mail server, serverVoIP (Asterisk), VPN server, proxy (squid), file server, systems for organizing staff interaction, monitoring systems, backup servers, network security assurance systems (Unified Threat Manager), and user login systems via Captive portal, etc., is supported. After installation, each of the supported modules is immediately ready to perform its functions. All modules are configured through an interactive wizard system and do not require manual configuration file editing.
Among the changes in the new release:
- Isolation profiles based on AppArmor have been updated.
- The antivirus module has updated the ClamAV antivirus package version and improved the isolation rules for the Clamd process.
- In the intrusion prevention system (IPS) module, the suricata-update command has been added for the initial configuration and update of the Suricata package.
- The web interface has improved the progress indication of operation execution.
- In the mail server management module, a function for editing email addresses has been added. The account configuration interface has been improved. An option has been added to disable SSL certificate verification in the fetchmail service.
- In the network configuration module, the interface for removing VLANs has been redesigned. The Netplan configuration has been updated.
- The NTP module has been transitioned from NTP to NTPsec.
- The samba module has updated NSS and PAM management. Domain level changes are now allowed through the web interface. The user import and export interface has been redesigned.
- In the web server management module, separate port disabling for HTTP and HTTPS has been allowed. Protection against incorrect virtual host configuration has been strengthened.
- The installation script for Debian has been redesigned.
- In zenbuntu-desktop, the X11 configuration has been redesigned, outdated dependencies v86d, gtk2-engines, video-intel, and video-qxl have been removed, and the system login splash screen has been revamped.
