The release of ALT Virtualization OS 10.0 and Simply Linux 10.0 based on the Tenth ALT platform (p10 Aronia) is now available.
ALT Virtualization 10.0, designed for use on servers and implementing virtualization features in corporate infrastructure, is available for all supported architectures: x86_64, AArch64, ppc64le. Changes in the new version include:
- System environment based on Linux kernel 5.10.85-std-def-kernel-alt1, Glibc 2.32, OpenSSL 1.1.1, as well as support for new hardware.
- In p10, a unified cgroup hierarchy (cgroup v2) is enabled by default. The cgroups kernel mechanism is widely used by important and popular tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, LXC, and CoreOS.
- The p10 repository includes pve-backup for creating a server that allows for backup management of virtual machines in PVE.
- Docker 20.10.11, Podman 3.4.3, LXC 4.0.10/LXD 4.17.
- Official container images have been updated: docker and linuxcontainers.
- Installation images for cloud environments have been updated.
- ZFS 2.1 (can be used for storage organization in PVE).
- Virtualization systems: PVE 7.0, OpenNebula 5.10.
- FreeIPA client version 4.9.7.
- QEMU 6.1.0.
- Virtual machine manager libvirt 7.9.0.
- Open vSwitch 2.16.1.
- New versions of file systems Ceph 15.2.15 (octopus), GlusterFS 8.4.
- The Kubernetes 1.22.4 container management system has transitioned to using cri-o.
Simply Linux 10.0 is prepared for x86_64, AArch64 (including support for 'Baikal-M'), AArch64 for RPi4, i586, e2k v3/v4/v5 (from 4C to 8C) and riscv64 (for the first time). The distribution is a user-friendly system with a classic desktop based on Xfce, providing complete localization of the interface and most applications. Changes in the new version of Simply Linux (non-x86/arm versions may differ from the following):
- System environment based on Linux kernel 5.10.85-std-def-kernel-alt1, Glibc 2.32, GCC 10 compiler set, systemd 249.7. Graphical tools for kernel updates are implemented by the alterator-update-kernel 1.4 utility.
- Xorg 1.20.13.
- Wine 6.14 for i586 and x86_64.
- Xfce 4.16 graphical shell (interface changes due to the transition to GTK+3 (3.22), improved display settings functionality, and new design). MATE 1.24 is also included.
- Thunar 4.16 file manager.
- Network management application NetworkManager 1.32.
- System management center Alterator 5.4.
- Chromium 96.0 browser. On riscv64 — Epiphany 41.3 and on e2k — Mozilla Firefox ESR 52.9.
- The Thunderbird 91.3 email client has improved handling of attachments and includes security updates. In riscv64, the Claws Mail 3.18 email client is available.
- The Pidgin 2.14.3 instant messaging client (available on all architectures except riscv64).
- LibreOffice 7.1.8 office applications.
- GIMP 2.10 raster graphics editor with an updated Russian translation.
- Inkscape 1.1 vector graphics editor (available on all architectures except riscv64). New export options include JPG, TIFF, optimized PNG, and WebP, and an extension manager has been added.
- Audacious 4.1 audio player offering a choice of Qt interface (with customizable hotkeys) or GTK.
- VLC 3.0.16 video player. In e2k and for riscv64 — Celluloid 0.21.
- Remmina 1.4 remote desktop client.
Installation images of Alt Server Virtualization and Simply Linux are available for download (Yandex mirror). Products are distributed under a license agreement. Individuals, including sole proprietors, can freely use the downloaded version. Commercial and governmental organizations may download and test the distribution. For ongoing use of "Alt Server Virtualization" in corporate infrastructure, legal entities must purchase licenses or enter into written licensing agreements.
Users of distributions based on the Ninth platform (p9) can update their systems from the p10 branch of the "Sisyphus" repository. New corporate users can obtain trial versions, while private users are traditionally offered to freely download the required version of the "Alt" OS from the "Basalt SPU" website or the new download site getalt.ru. Options for Elbrus processors are available to legal entities that have signed an NDA with MCST JSC, upon written request.
The support term for security updates (unless otherwise specified in the supply conditions) is until December 31, 2024.
Developers are invited to participate in improving the "Sisyphus" repository; there is also an opportunity to utilize the development, building, and lifecycle management infrastructure for their purposes, which is used to develop the Alt OS. These technologies and tools are created and refined by specialists from the ALT Linux Team.
