After 11 months of development, the release of VeraCrypt 1.26.14 has been published. This project is a fork of the disk encryption system TrueCrypt, which has ceased to exist. VeraCrypt is notable for replacing the RIPEMD-160 algorithm used in TrueCrypt with SHA-512 and SHA-256, increasing the number of hashing iterations, simplifying the build process for Linux and macOS, and addressing issues identified during the audit of TrueCrypt's source code. The code developed by the VeraCrypt project is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, while borrowings from TrueCrypt continue to be provided under the TrueCrypt License 3.0. Ready builds are available for Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, and macOS.
Among the changes in the new version:
- In the Linux version, the graphical interface has been adapted to work in environments that support only the Wayland protocol.
- In Linux, it is now possible to build with a cryptographic backend based on the wolfCrypt engine from the wolfSSL project.
- The installer protection for Linux has been improved by including ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) mode in builds with older versions of GCC.
- For platforms other than Windows, compatibility of the codebase with wxWidgets 3.3 has been ensured, and a language selection feature for the interface has been implemented.
- Error messages during mounting have been expanded to reflect information about the removal of support for old algorithms and TrueCrypt.
- Support for using FUSE-T as an alternative to MacFUSE has been added to the builds for macOS.
- The builds for the FreeBSD platform now support automatic detection and mounting of ext2/3/4, exFAT, and NTFS file systems.
- Detection of encrypted partitions vulnerable to master key vulnerabilities based on the XTS algorithm, caused by generating identical primary and secondary keys under certain circumstances, has been implemented.
