Release of the version control system Apache Subversion 1.12.0

After 6 months of development, the Apache Software Foundation released released the version control system Subversion 1.12.0. Despite the development of decentralized systems, Subversion continues to be popular in commercial companies and projects that use a centralized approach to version and configuration management of software systems. Some notable open projects using Subversion include: Apache projects, FreeBSD, Free Pascal, OpenSCADA, GCC, and LLVM. The release of Subversion 1.12 is categorized as a standard release, with the next LTS release planned to be Subversion 1.14, expected in April 2020 and supported until 2024.

Key improvements Subversion 1.12:

  • Enhanced interactive interface capabilities for conflict resolution have been added, including support for handling situations where elements are moved to other directories, as well as improved parsing of cases where files and directories not covered by the versioning system appear in the working copy of the repository;
  • The server now ensures that definitions of empty groups in authorization rules are ignored, and a warning is displayed if they are present when the svnauthz command is executed;
  • On the client side in Unix-like systems, support for storing passwords on disk in plaintext is disabled by default at compile time. Users are advised to use systems for storing passwords such as GNOME Keyring, Kwallet, or GPG-Agent;
  • The behavior of copy operations in the source repository and working copy has been improved — existing parent directories and files with revisions are now handled correctly;
  • The output of the 'svn list' command has been improved: long author names are no longer truncated, and a '—human-readable' (-H) option has been added for displaying sizes in a readable format (bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, etc.);
  • The 'svn info' command now shows the size of files in the repository;
  • In the 'svn cleanup' command, after confirming the deletion of ignored or unversioned items, directories marked as read-only are now also deleted;
  • In the experimental commands 'svn x-shelve/x-unshelve/x-shelves'
    The reliability of processing various types of changes has been enhanced. Commands from the "shelve" set allow unfinished changes in the working copy to be temporarily shelved, enabling urgent work on something else, and then restoring the unfinished changes back to the working copy without resorting to tricks like saving a patch via "svn diff" followed by restoring it through "svn patch";
  • The reliability of the experimental commit checkpointing feature has been improved, allowing a snapshot of changes that have not yet been committed to be saved, and later restoring any of the saved versions of those changes in the working copy (for example, to revert the working copy state in case of an erroneous update);
