After two years since the last update, the release of the classic industrial desktop environment CDE 2.5.3 (Common Desktop Environment) is now available. CDE was created in the early 1990s through a collaboration among Sun Microsystems, HP, IBM, DEC, SCO, Fujitsu, and Hitachi, and for many years it served as the standard graphical environment for Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, Digital UNIX, and UnixWare. In 2012, the code for CDE 2.1 was released by The Open Group under the LGPL license.
The CDE source code includes an XDMCP-compatible login manager, session manager, window manager, CDE FrontPanel, desktop manager, inter-process communication bus, desktop toolkit, shell and C application development tools, and components for integrating third-party applications. To build it, the Motif toolkit is needed, which has since been transitioned to an open-source project alongside CDE.
In the new release:
- The window manager dtwm has been enhanced to support additional mouse buttons.
- A systemd service has been added to launch the dtlogin login manager.
- In the dtfile file manager, the sh command interpreter is now used to execute the find command instead of ksh.
- The parser in the dthelp help system has been updated to use standard character case conversion functions provided in the ctype.h header file.
- Improved FreeBSD support in the dtcm calendar scheduler.
- Compatibility with GCC 15 has been ensured.
- The terminal emulator dtterm has been changed from mktemp to mkstemp for creating temporary files. Issues with copy/paste via the clipboard have been resolved.
- Scripts for initializing and configuring CDE on Raspberry Pi boards have been added.
- DtMmdb and dtdocbook have been migrated from Berkeley DB to using the LMDB library.
- In dtcreate, the command for creating desktop objects, proper popup window output has been implemented.
