Release of the Free Emulator for Classic Quests ScummVM 2.8.0

The release of the cross-platform interpreter for classic quests ScummVM 2.8.0 has been introduced, replacing the executable files for games and allowing many classic games to run on platforms for which they were not originally designed. The project code is distributed under the GPLv3+ license.

A total of over 320 quests are supported, including games from companies like LucasArts, Humongous Entertainment, Revolution Software, Cyan, and Sierra, such as Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Myst, Blade Runner, King’s Quest 1-7, Space Quest 1-6, Discworld, Simon the Sorcerer, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, and The Legend of Kyrandia. Games can be launched on platforms including Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, PS Vita, Switch, Dreamcast, AmigaOS, Atari/FreeMiNT, RISC OS, Haiku, PSP, PS3, Maemo, GCW Zero, and more.

    • 14 games based on the AGS (Adventure Game Studio) engine.
  • The port for RetroArch has been rewritten and integrated into the main framework.
  • The port for the Atari platform has been completely rewritten and adapted for direct hardware access (without using SDL).
  • Optimizations have been made to graphic rendering operations, utilizing SIMD vector instructions such as SSE, AVX2, and NEON in the AGS engine and some basic functions for acceleration. As a result, rendering speed has increased 4-14 times in many situations.
  • Integration with the Backyard Sports Online project has been ensured, adding support for many multiplayer network games, such as Backyard Football, Backyard Baseball 2001, and Backyard Football 2002. Preliminary support for network gaming in Moonbase Commander has also been added.
  • The AGS engine has been updated to version 3.6.0.53.
  • Many native graphical dialogues for SCUMM games have been implemented. The code for sound support in SCUMM Humongous Entertainment games has been reworked.
  • For the Broken Sword 1 game engine, support has been implemented for many details (scene transitions, menus, fonts, inactivity animations) that make the game as close to the original version as possible.
