The release of the free package for document layout Scribus 1.7.0 has been presented. The package provides tools for professional layout of printed materials, includes tools for PDF generation, and supports working with separate color profiles, CMYK, spot colors, and ICC. The program is written using the Qt toolkit and is distributed under the GPLv2+ license. Ready binary builds are prepared for Linux (AppImage), macOS, and Windows.
Branch 1.7 is presented as experimental — after final stabilization and recognition of readiness for widespread adoption, a stable release of Scribus 1.8.0 will be formed based on branch 1.7.
Key changes in Scribus 1.7.0:
- Porting the codebase to Qt 6 and leveraging specific capabilities of Qt 6.
- Support for a dark theme.
- A new docking panel system based on the Qt Advanced Docking System components. Users are given the ability to customize their desired window layout and dock panels.
- Transition to a new set of icons provided in SVG format, displaying correctly regardless of scaling level and screen resolution. The ability to change icon colors without altering the icons and without recompiling Scribus.
- A new implementation of palettes (tool panels). Palettes can now be freely moved to different parts of the interface in drag & drop mode. The tools for managing page styles have implemented support for previewing changes.
- The design of the new document creation dialog has been changed. The list of size and visualization templates has been updated.
- General improvements to the user interface have been made, enhancing the visibility and aesthetics of elements. The color selection panel has been modernized.
- The implementation of the ruler along the edges of the page in the document layout has been improved.
- A space checking mode has been added to visualize free space on the page.
- A new implementation of features for working with the table of contents has been proposed. It allows for the use of multiple tables of contents and indexes, as well as the application of different styles.
- The ability to add custom scripts to the menu has been provided.
- An option to save documents in formats compatible with previous versions of Scribus has been added.
- The ability to build for OS/2 has been restored.
