The release of TeX Live 2021 has been prepared, created in 1996 based on the teTeX project. TeX Live is the simplest way to deploy infrastructure for preparing scientific documentation, regardless of the operating system used. A DVD build (4.4 GB) of TeX Live 2021 has been created for download, which contains a working Live environment, a complete set of installation files for various operating systems, a copy of the CTAN (Comprehensive TeX Archive Network) repository, and a selection of documentation in various languages (including Russian).
Notable new features include:
- Changes proposed by Donald Knuth have been included in TeX and Metafont, aimed at addressing some lesser-known issues related to processing ‘\tracinglostchars’ and ‘\tracingmacros’.
- In LuaTeX, the Lua interpreter has been updated to version 5.3.6.
- In the MetaPost graphical object description language interpreter, the environment variable SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH has been added to ensure reproducible builds.
- In pdfTeX, new primitives ‘\pdfrunninglinkoff’ and ‘\pdfrunninglinkon’ have been implemented to disable the generation of links and footers. Support for the poppler library has been discontinued — pdfTeX now always uses libs/xpdf.
- In Dvipdfmx, the safe mode (dvipdfmx-unsafe.cfg) to run Ghostscript is enabled by default.
