A release of the specialized distribution Tails 5.14 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been formulated, based on the Debian package base and designed for anonymous web access. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections, except for traffic through the Tor network, are by default blocked by the packet filter. User data storage in persistence mode between sessions uses encryption. An iso image has been prepared that can operate in Live mode, with a size of 1.2 GB.
In the new version:
- Automatic conversion of existing persistent and encrypted LUKS1 partitions to LUKS2 format is provided, which uses more secure cryptographic algorithms. The key generation function has been replaced from PBKDF2 to Argon2id. Previously used encryption parameters in LUKS1 could have been compromised using special equipment with physical access to the device.
- The installer now offers the ability to create a complete backup of the persistent storage.
- Automatic detection of network connections through Captive portal is provided when setting up automatic connection to Tor.
- Tor Browser has been updated to version 12.0.7.
- The interface for working with persistent storage has been modernized. The button for creating persistent storage has been replaced with a switch, and descriptions of individual extended capabilities of persistent storage have been returned.
In the new version of Tor Browser 12.0.7, synchronization with the Firefox 102.12 ESR codebase has been performed, fixing 11 vulnerabilities. The version of the NoScript extension has been updated to 11.4.22.
